How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?

Unwanted tattoos can be a real burden. The drawbacks can range from the inconvenience of unsightly or no longer relevant ink, to interfering with your career aspirations.

Luckily, technology has come a long way in recent years. Those of us who want to remove our ink now have a relatively easy way of doing so.

The process is fairly simple and can be broken down with the following steps:

  • Selective lasers – These days, technology has advanced enough so that lasers can specifically target only the areas of your skin that contain ink. This prevents damage to the surrounding areas of skin, as only skin containing ink pigment will be targeted.

  • Speed and heat – In order to remove a tattoo, the ink particles need to be broken apart. Laser tattoo removal technology accomplishes this by using Q-switch lasers–this type is extremely hot and fast-working. The ink particles are heated up in order to cause thermal expansion; however, the lasers must act quickly enough to keep half of the particles cool. These opposing hot and cold forces are what help break the ink particles apart.

  • Absorption – After the ink particles are broken down into smaller pieces, your body naturally facilitates the next step of the process as your white blood cells absorb the ink particles and transport them from the skin to the liver.

Despite the permanent nature of tattoos, modern technology has provided relief for those of us who have come to regret going under the needle. Most tattoo removal projects require multiple sessions, depending on the colors of the ink, size of the tattoo, location of the tattoo, and other factors such as whether or not you’re a smoker.
